A powerful storm system is set to trigger a widespread severe weather outbreak this weekend, threatening areas from the Ohio Valley to the Mississippi and Tennessee valleys with tornadoes, destructive winds, and very large hail. The stormy weather is already getting underway this afternoon, as low pressure slides toward the Gulf from Texas. A Tornado Watch has been issued for eastern Texas and western Louisiana, including the eastern suburbs of Houston, Port Arthur, Texas, and Lake Charles and Fort Polk, La. The primary threats with any storms would be hail, very heavy rain, and perhaps a few tornadoes.
As Saturday progresses, a new storm system is poised to drop from the Rockies into the Plains. This storm will feed off warm and humid air in the region, leading to a few evening thunderstorms. Large hail to the size of baseballs is the biggest threat. This storm will then make its way eastward into the Mississippi Valley for Sunday’s main event.
The government’s Storm Prediction Center has issued an Enhanced Risk (level 3 of 5) for severe storms from Illinois and Indiana southwestward through Arkansas and northern Mississippi, including cities such as Indianapolis, St. Louis, Louisville, Nashville, and Memphis. A larger Slight Risk (level 2 of 5) covers surrounding areas from western Ohio into central Texas, putting even more communities at risk.
The main threats include strong tornadoes, some of which could be long-track, damaging windgusts over 60 mph, and hail larger than golf balls. The most intense storms may produce baseball-sized hail. Storms are expected to develop by Sunday afternoon and continue into the overnight hours as they push eastward.
Before the main event, isolated severe storms are possible Saturday night from northern Oklahoma into the Missouri Valley, with large hail being the primary concern. A brief tornado or two may also occur in this region.
