Stop right there and hold off from leaving your house before you know how to prepare for severe weather. The last thing you want to have happen is be stuck out side in the middle of a severe thunderstorm. Here are a few things you can do before severe weather hits your area.

Stay Ahead: Make checking your local forecast part of your daily routine, either through the WeatherBug app, your local news station or a weather radio. These sources will tell you if you are at risk for severe weather.

Stay Alert: This can be keeping an ear out for outdoor sirens or enabling emergency alerts on your smart phone. If your community does use outdoor sirens, push notifications should also be enabled to be extra prepared in case you don’t hear a siren.

Have a Plan: Create a household plan on where your emergency meeting place is. The best options for a safe place to go are a basement, storm cellar or an interior room on the lowest floor with no windows. Your household should also practice this plan before severe weather hits and make sure to include your pets as well.

Prepare Your Home: Keep up with yard work outside your home, primarily trimming trees and branches that could pose a threat. Secure windows and doors if you have time as well. If you have a busy family, clean up any toys and loose objects outside prior to thunderstorms arriving. Also take account any valuable objects that you don’t want damaged or lost and place them inside or under a sturdy structure.

Help Your Community: This can include helping your elderly neighbor secure their home or taking CPR training in the event someone gets hurt.

Being prepared with these tips will help you stay ahead when severe weather strikes.
