After the extended severe weather outbreak in the central U.S., the active severe thunderstorm pattern will close out across the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida today.
A cold front will get slowly dragged eastward to the Atlantic coast today into tonight, with storms continuing to form along and ahead of the front throughout the day. These storms will be capable of producing damaging wind gusts with a few embedded tornadoes possible.
The best combination of instability and strong winds aloft will be from northern Florida to southeastern South Carolina. This is where the Storm Prediction Center has issued a Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms, which includes Tallahassee and Jacksonville, Fla., Savannah, Ga., and Columbia, S.C.
Some of these storms will move across the same areas today, where rain amounts could reach 1 to 2 inches from the Florida Panhandle to the central and eastern Carolinas and southeastern Virginia.
The best way to remain safe is to stay prepared and informed about your local weather. Have a severe weather kit packed with a battery-operated radio, water, and non-perishable food items should you be without power for long periods of time. Also, check the WeatherBug app frequently for any updates on today’s severe weather. Remember, “When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!”
